“It depends. What do you want to do with it?”

As a retired teacher and part-time I.T. manager, that was always my answer when someone asked for tech advice. For this blog, the answer to “Why operate from a recliner?” is simple: Because life happens in the living room, not the shed.

Welcome to ROTA: Recliners on the Air. My name is Paul (N4FTD), and I’m the Control Operator of this little digital experiment. My mission is to show you how to stay connected to the ionosphere without disconnecting from the people in your own home.

The Mission

This blog is dedicated to the “Architecture of Presence.” It’s about the technical and metaphorical journey of moving a world-class amateur radio station out of the isolated “shack” and into the heart of the home.

What to Expect Here

If you decide to spend some time in my neck of the woods (or my corner of the living room), here is what we’ll be exploring together:

  • The Radio Metaphors: I don’t just talk about COM ports and IP addresses. We’ll be discussing “The Radio Engine” in the shed, the “Digital Plumbing” in the walls, and the “Tunnels” that connect them.
  • Parallel Play: How to chase a POTA (Parks on the Air) activator while sitting side-by-side with my wife, Sue, as she watches the news or chats with the grandkids.
  • Caregiver Command: The reality of being a primary caregiver while maintaining a high-tech hobby.
  • The Technical “Because I Can”: Real-world troubleshooting of the new Icom IC-7300Mk2 and the software that makes remote operation possible.

Why the Recliner?

Because a 21-foot campervan, a 7-mile GMRS link to my grandkids, and a shed-shack are all great—but the most important “DX” is the person sitting three feet away from me in the living room.

I’m glad you’re here. Let’s start digging some tunnels.
